Field Trips

We run guided field trips between spring and fall, giving members the chance to locate and collect their own rock, mineral, crystal, and fossil specimens!

At present we have 4 Field Trips Scheduled for 2026 and more coming. ANY Member of any CCFMS club is welcome to book and join us for ANY of these Field Trips.

Bookings can be made at the bottom of this page.

Cobalt, Ontario “Silver Mine Adventures” Field Trips

July 18/19 & September 19/20

Before you book, please read these Notes:

-It is a 6-hour drive from Brantford.

-While carpooling is encouraged, The BLMS does not arrange it. If you wish to join someone for the ride or have lots of space, please let us know at: thebrantfordlapandmin.com. With your permissions we may be able to link people up.

-We will be meeting at 9am each morning at the Haileybury Beach Motel. There are also other accommodations in Temiskaming Shores and Haileybury and a campground between the two towns.

-Over the weekend, we will spend 12 to 16 hours looking for silver and driving to the sites. Participants can leave early each day so long as they notify the Field Trip Leader.

-The list of tools needed and what to bring will be sent to you when you book. However, it should be mentioned that you will need a decent metal detector and pin pointer. Sometimes 2 persons share these. Our Guide might still have 1 or 2 detectors available for rent.

-We are primarily looking for rocks that have silver veins in Nipissing Diabase and/or Calcite. There are also other assorted minerals such as Nickeline and Feldspars.

-We will not be entering any mines. Rather we are detecting/collecting on rock piles from abandoned mines that we have specific permission for and which the general public is not permitted to enter.

-100% of what you find is yours to keep and there are no extra fees.

-Anyone who is at least 14 years old may register and participate. For safety, we provide vests, a whistle and have strict protocols.

-When you book your field trip you will be asked to read and digitally sign the safety information & risk waiver.
